The recent January flooding in Maryborough, saw the failure of a temporary flood barrier, that caused a change in the emergency management of the township. Designing, constructing and maintaining levees are important to ensure they can be used as a means of flood protection. We have brought together a panel of international (Netherlands) and local (Queensland) professionals, to get a glimpse into their experiences and then open the floor to your questions.
This 1-hour webinar, hosted by Stormwater Queensland, will include presentations from Dion Jones, Christian Huising and Brendan Wallace, followed by a Q&A with attendees.

This webinar seeks to disrupt the current method of selecting a pipe where only constructability, durability and cost are considered. New criteria, embodied carbon and operational energy, must be considered in order to reduce the environmental impact of pipeline, sewerage and drainage projects.
The presentation uses a method of calculating embodied carbon emissions of approved materials, rather than proposing new materials. Therefore, this tool can be used to reduce carbon emissions immediately, at a critical time for climate change and contributes to an analysis, that will assist water utilities in South-East Queensland (SEQ) to make informed decisions about which approved pipe materials have the least embodied carbon emissions.

franc.sydney 2022 is powered by Stormwater NSW and is all about challenging the rationality of current practices and perceptions of urban stormwater and its management. It is a community of individuals and organisations who are, in some way, connected to or effected by urban stormwater and are passionate about changing the way the industry operates to become more future-focused, resilient, adaptive and connected.
The stormwater industry has, for decades, tried to shift the balance between vested interests and the greater good, but it has become clear that it can’t do this alone. So franc.sydney 2022 brings together individuals from beyond stormwater to tackle this issue together. Our members include professionals, scientists, academics, researchers and advocates that recognise the need for change, the need to put the long-term prosperity of the health of our waterways, emissions and sustainable development above short-term political and financial interests. Most importantly, we bring these people together to help us all speak with one voice.
And it all begins by having ‘franc’ discussions.
This conference has a total of seventeen (17) guest speakers (up from the traditional four), and will include a range of new topics including:
- How to develop resilient communities.
- The relationship between the environment and human health.
- Finding ways to help protect our aquatic environment and conserve biodiversity; and
Conversations between scientists, planners, hydrologists, environmentalists and academics to ensure we are all on the ‘same page’ going forward.
Franc.Sydney has also moved to become a hybrid event giving everyone the opportunity to be a part of franc either in person or from the comfort of your own home. In-person and virtual registrations are exchangeable at the rate you paid (early bird, standard) if you are to change your mind closer to the date.

Stormwater Queensland are hosting a Member’s only exclusive event ‘The Future of Stormwater Management in Queensland‘, face to face panel discussion and networking event in Brisbane, Thursday 4th August 3:15-6pm. The event is FREE for all Stormwater Queensland Members but seating is limited, however there is also an option for virtual attendance.
This event will be a highly interactive discussion with a panel of Stormwater Queensland committee members, about ‘The Future of Stormwater Management in Queensland’. We will consider the current state of our industry and the changes needed to meet the challenges of the future. The session will include a Q&A with attendees and virtual attendees can also contribute questions prior to the event. Water by Design, in collaboration with BMT and the Department of Environment and Science, have reviewed the past 16 years of science and drawn on expertise from a variety of professionals to provide the most significant update to bioretention filter materials specifications since the Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB) 2006 specifications. Water by Design will soon be publishing the new specifications and in anticipation of the release, has partnered with Stormwater Queensland to host the two primary authors in this webinar.
The webinar will help explain how the new specifications seek to address the widely observed issue of plant dieback in bioretention by focusing on the biology of filter media as part of a broader ecological system. Presenting a new approach to best practice and expected to be adopted by regulatory authorities, this is an important webinar for practitioners to attend. While the new specifications are to be published in Queensland, they can be applied nationally and therefore, the webinar is relevant to anyone interested in bioretention systems.
The webinar will include a presentation (of approximately 35 minutes) by BMT’s Paul Dubowski and Water by Design’s Ben Penhallurick, followed by Q&A with attendees.

Civil engineers, and environmental engineers and scientists in the early stages of their career are often tasked with developing, designing and analysing stormwater management strategies. These individuals are an integral part of the stormwater industry, and need to be supported, connected, and advocated for. Stormwater Queensland is hosting this webinar event to help develop an Early Career Professionals (ECP) group, to help provide a platform for ECPs in the stormwater industry and launch Stormwater Queensland’s proposed mentoring network for ECPs.
The panel discussion will centre around the building blocks of a career in stormwater and what can you expect as you develop your skills and networks. We want to highlight the various career paths you can take and the potential career trajectory your career in stormwater could lead to. The webinar will feature two highly experienced and accomplished leaders in this field.

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), Engineers Australia (EA) and Stormwater Queensland (SQ) are hosting the first event of a new annual event series on 9 August 2023. The event aims to bring professionals involved in blue, green and grey infrastructure design, traditional owners, policy makers and others together to achieve the best economic, environmental, and social outcomes for South East Queensland (SEQ) communities.
Bringing the Blue, Green and Grey Together will discuss how to drive a multidisciplinary and intercultural approach to water sensitive urban design (WSUD), focusing on collaboration between design professionals and traditional owners in projects ranging from the development precinct to infrastructure asset scale. An enduring output of the event series will be an industry white paper presenting barriers to the above and practical actions and solutions for consideration by decision makers and stakeholders, including local governments and state government departments.
