THE 2022 SEQ FLOODS – PERSPECTIVE ON

March 2022 has seen an incredible amount of rain falling in the South East Queensland (SEQ) catchments and sadly, loss of life, houses and property for many. Here is a look into Stormwater Queensland President, Katie Fletcher’s personal experiences of the recent flooding in a semi-rural area and how this can be applied to help those in urban areas, who may be subject to flooding more and more in the coming decades.

BRISBANE FLOODING COMPLAINTS RISING

 

Given recent flooding and storm events in Queensland, this article from February proves timely for helping people to understand the role they play in stormwater management on their own properties.

Stormwater Queensland Secretary, David Simpson, was also a guest speaker on ABC Radio Brisbane’s program ‘Drive’ by Steve Austin on Tuesday 8 February 2022. You can listen to him discuss the issue.

DRAFT MARINE PARKS NETWORK MANAGEMENT PLAN

 

Stormwater NSW recently provided a submission to NSW Marine Estate Management Authority on the Draft Marine Parks Network Management Plan.  The submission is available here.

GLOBAL TREATY TO END PLASTIC POLLUTION

 

On 2 March 2022, at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) in Nairobi, Kenya, ministers and representatives from 173 countries formally adopted a resolution to start negotiations for a legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution. With the flow of plastic entering the ocean expected to double by 2040, and 80% of ocean plastic being land-based (as stormwater as the major transport mechanism), it is anticipated that improved stormwater management practices will play a key role in the treaty.  Further information on the treaty is available here.
